Low Level Radioactive Waste (LLRW) Disposal Facilities

Low Level Waste Disposal Facilities

There are currently four active, licensed low-level radioactive waste disposal facilities. http://www.nrc.gov/waste/llw-disposal/licensing/locations.html#map Access to dispose of LLRW at these facilities is restricted by waste class and compact membership. The four active, licensed LLRW disposal facilities are:

U.S. Ecology, located in Richland, Washington
U.S. Ecology accepts Classes A-C waste from the 11 member states of the Northwest and Rocky Mountain Compacts . U.S. Ecology is licensed by the State of Washington.

EnergySolutions Clive Operations, located in Clive, Utah
EnergySolutions Clive accepts Class A waste from all regions of the United States. Energy Solutions, Clive Operations, is licensed by the State of Utah.

EnergySolutions Barnwell Operations, located in Barnwell, South Carolina
As of July 2008, EnergySolutions Barnwell accepts Class A-C waste only from the 3 member states of the Atlantic Compact. Energy Solutions, Barnwell Operations, is licensed by the state of South Carolina.

Waste Control Specialists, LLC, located in Andrews, Texas
Waste Control Specialists accepts Classes A, B, and C from the Texas Compact states (Texas and Vermont) and from non-compact states. Waste Control Specialists is licensed by the State of Texas.

U.S. LLRW Compacts

There are currently 10 regional compacts. This information came from Table 14 in NUREG 1350 Vol 21, 2009-2010.
